Is light matter?  Does air take up space?  Children who attend this workshop will engage in hands-on investigations to answer questions like these, sparking a new fascination with matter. Children will work through the process of scientific inquiry as they learn about the different states of matter, their molecular structures, and physical/chemical changes.  Each child will enjoy making a paper rocket that launches, an instant balloon inflator, and a mysterious substance called “gak” that has properties of both a solid and liquid.

A Wild Warm Wind

Warm ocean water and consistent wind speed and direction are perfect ingredients for creating hurricanes. Children in the workshop today learned all about these violent storms.

By using a bowl of swirling water and a paperclip, students could observe how the strongest winds in a hurricane are in the eyewall.
They used water and food coloring to imitate the bands of clouds that form in a hurricane.

Children also learned how the phenomenon called the Coriolis effect causes hurricanes in the northern hemisphere to spin counterclockwise while hurricanes in the southern hemisphere spin clockwise. This was easily demonstrated with a spinning globe and an interactive game we played outside with a ball.
Thanks to extreme weather chasers, children were able to view some amazing video footage of storm surge. This led into a discussion about how wave height increases as it reaches shallow water. Children used straws to blow wind across pans of both shallow and deep water and compared the height of the waves they made.
Children also learned how scientists name hurricanes and categorize them by wind speed.
